Credit Repair Services. Utilizing a service to repair your bad credit.

Know your Rights

A credit repair service will write dispute letters on your behalf to the three major credit reporting bureaus. The bureaus will continually verify the accuracy and completeness of your credit profile. There are hundreds of thousands of credit repair service companies that will assist you in this way. You can also purchase a Do-it-Yourself credit repair service kit to clean up or repair your credit.

Credit repair is not only possible, it is totally legal. A credit repair service will explain your consumer rights and how the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) protects you. The FCRA makes certain that the credit bureaus always have an accurate and verifiable accounting of your credit history.

Should you feel that the information on your credit report is not accurate, then you can ask for an investigation. The credit bureau is obligated to respond to every request for an investigation and they must get back to you within a reasonable amount of time (usually within thirty days.)

The credit bureaus will contact each company and ask for verification that the information on your credit report is accurate. The credit bureau updates, corrects, or deletes each item. If any company in question does not respond within a reasonable amount of time, then that item must be removed from your credit report (until it can be verified.)

As a rule, everything that involves your debt, credit, and personal finances can be done on your own. There are many products, companies, and attorneys that can help you if you need them. There is a lot involved in dealing with the three different credit bureaus and the various creditors, so, seeking professional help is a good idea.

There are both good and bad/scam companies out there looking for your business so make sure that you are aware of your rights. You can find them in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA.)

You should look for the following when selecting representation:

  • Company will not charge you until you have received action.
  • Company has a minimal or no start up fee.
  • Company provides you with a good understanding of how credit repair works.
  • Company provides you with your Consumer Rights under Federal Law.
  • Company does not make false claims about their service
  • Company does not perform any services until they have a signed contract with you and you have completed a three day waiting period.

Company must also give you the appropriate time to cancel the contract without paying any fees.

Many companies will offer a guarantee on their work. Understand that there can be no guarantees that items will be removed and be removed permanently from your file (depending on your situation.) No company or lawyer can have access to the credit bureaus database. A company can only guarantee their performance. Finally, only accurate and verifiable information will remain on your credit report.
