Government debt consolidation programs assist persons in debit with paying off their debts and restoring their credit. Unlike other debt consolidation programs, government debt consolidation programs do not involve loans of any type. Nor do the government debt consolidation programs involve bankruptcy or liquidation of the debts, but rather a re-education of the consumer and restructuring the debts themselves and how they are paid.

Many government debt consolidation programs are run through non-profit agencies. There is minimal to no cost to use a government debt consolidation program. Trained debt counselors work with you in determining your debt and income ratio in order to devise an affordable payment plan. The counselors will also look at the scope of your debt and determine your high priority debts that you will want to pay off first. Once the target monthly payment amount and high target debts have been established, the counselor will communicate with your creditors to negotiate lower payments, interest rates and at times no interest at all. Once all this has been established, you start paying one monthly payment to the agency working with you. From there, they take your payment and divide it out amongst your creditors. As debts are paid off, the amount of the payment that went to the paid off debt gets added to the payment amount of next target debt, until all debts have been cleared.

A benefit of using a government debt consolidation program is that you are not going into debt to pay off your debt. Another advantage to government debt consolidation programs is that when you agree for the agency to help you with your debt, you enter an agreement that prohibits you from creating anymore debt as long as you are in the program. In many cases, credit cards are cancelled to avoid the temptation. Since the government debt consolidation programs are not loans, you are not paying interest either.
