Repair your Credit File. Tips for fixing your credit score.
Improve Your Credit File
Staggering numbers of Americans have damaged their credit ratings. Whatever the reasons, they each suffer from bad credit, and must find a way to repair it to return to a normal life.
It's hard work to rebuild your credit rating, but it can be done. You can repair your credit file.
Here are five steps to repair your credit file:
1. Put those cards away.
Don't close your accounts because you may have trouble getting new cards. Stop using them. Your goal is to repair your credit file and to get out of debt.
2. Figure out your finances.
Look closely at budgets and net-worth statements. It will help you to measure your success.
Some 30% to 40% of credit report files will contain errors, so clear those up first.
Write to the credit bureau detailing the errors in your report. Send your correspondence by certified mail with a return receipt requested. This will provide you with a paper trail and help you remember when to follow up.
Provide backup materials when you can. If you've paid off a bill and received a letter from the creditor acknowledging that the debt is paid, send along a copy.
3. Devise a plan.
Begin paying your bills on time. Pay at least the minimum balance on each bill within 30 days. If you are struggling, consider credit counseling or even bankruptcy for a fresh start. Decide on the course of action you will take and stick with it.
4. Negotiate with your creditors.
Nine out of 10 creditors will renegotiate terms when you're having trouble paying bills. Write a letter to your creditors describing your problem and requesting a reduced payment schedule. Stick to it!
5. Add pertinent information to your credit file.
Your credit report file will be damaged as much by the information that is omitted as by the negative information that is found there. You are entitled to add information that will help your rating.
You are allowed to write a letter of up to 100 words involving any credit dispute and the credit reporting agency must provide this letter to any creditors who ask for information. This could include: details of loans paid on schedule, active accounts where you have a good record, salary increases at your job, and information about your mortgage, car loan or the settlements of any disputed bills.
Write a letter to the bureau, enclose a copy of your credit report and the information that you would like added to the report. Also include information that will allow the credit bureau to verify it.
You will be well on your way to credit file repair. Keep in mind that the amount you repay will not be as important as a consistent payment record.
